2009 Sympsoium Schedule

Day 1 Thursday the 12th registration begins at 8:00 at Rookery Bay. There will be a Symposium overview as to how it will work for the 4 days and what will be where. The Symposium is $30.00 for adults and $15.00 for kids under 16 for ALL 4 days, excluding food, a few classes and food.

There will be 1 talk in the morning and then visitors are free to explore the Learning Center for free and either have lunch with most of us down at the Fish House or stay at Rookery Bay.

Talks and presentations will begin at 2:00pm and continue until about 5:30. Thursday night at 6:30 there will be a pallet party here at the shop. The Captains meeting for the Kayak Slam Tournament will also be held here at the shop at that time to go over the rules and regulations for Saturday's tournament. Please RSVP for the party as we will have free wings and soda as always. Feel free to bring anything else that you want to eat, drink or share, as well as a camping chair.

Day 2 Friday the 13th a fishing trip will be leaving from Everglades City at 7:00am. Please email the shop if you wish to go on this trip. Everyone else will meet for  breakfast at the Capri Fish House.

At 9:00am Dave Whitford will be leading a picnic trip to Brush Island from Goodland. Please email the shop if you would like to go on that trip. Please RSVP with your lunch selection. Please note that lunches must be pre paid at time of registration.

Lunches are provided by the Little Bar and if you went on one of these picnics last season you know that the meals are VERY nice.

Special thanks to Dave for offering to lead this trip. Please thank him when you go and tell him that he doesn't look a day over 60-he loves that.

There will also be lessons at the Isle of Capri from 9-12. The lessons in green are pay-for  lessons and if not they are free.

Lunch will be held at the Oyster House in Everglades City that day for those who went on the fishing trip. For everyone else  talks and presentations will begin again at 2:00 at Rookery Bay and go until 5:30.

Dinner Friday evening will be at The Blue Provence that night and will be the highlight dinner. Dinner  needs to be reserved in advance. Please RSVP ASAP.  You will be getting a $90 3 course meal for $31 including tax and gratuity. This is the big dinner of the Symposium and we really want to thank Jacques at Blue Provence for sponsoring this.  Please call or e-mail us to let us know if you are coming.

Day 3 Saturday the 14th will start at the Isle of Capri Fish House and end there as well. The Full Marco Race and the Half Marco race will be leaving from here. We will be doing barrel races and a recreational Johnson Island race from here as well. These will start at 9:00.  Cash prizes for the Marco Races and tons of other prizes for the recreational races.

Frank Carrol's full Reggae band will be playing starting around 10:00 and playing until 2:00. This is the full band with all of his buddies from back in the day. Frank has assured us that it will be out of control. Demo boats from all of our manufacturers will be available for people to try out and paddle around with, as well as the sales reps. Please note that we will have Steve Scherrer, the head designer at Wilderness Systems flying in from Portland, OR to answer all of your boat questions.  A semi private rolling lesson will be available for anyone interested around 9:30ish.

Dave Whitford is going to do a Kayak Camping demonstration at 2:00pm and there will be a Johnson Island tour around 2:30.

Day 4 Sunday the 15th will start with Breakfast at The Capri Fish House at 7:00. At 8:30 there will be a forward stroke refinement class for free.

At 10:00 Jay Rose will be doing a Greenland Rolling Demonstration followed up by a Mangrove tour with Paul Westberry at 10:30.

At 12:00 Mike Devlin and Don McCumber of 21st Century Kayaks will be doing their Step Forward Into History show assembling one of their very own skin on fram kayaks in less than an hour.

The Reggae band will be playing again today and you'll get another chance to try out boats from the manufacturers.  After lunch there will be a beginner Surf Ski clinic at 1:30 to be followed up with a guided Sea Oat Island tour at 2:00pm.
